Why Euljiro is worth an evening: workshops by day, pubs by night

You have one free evening in central Seoul. You want food, a few small alleys and a neighborhood that still works for a living. Euljiro is a good fit if you go on a weekday and start before the shops close. If it's a Sunday or a public holiday, skip the workshop part and come just for dinner and Nogari Alley. Below you'll find which station to use, a five-stop route, where to eat, which day works, and a few practical notes.

Euljiro runs between City Hall and Dongdaemun, and it was once the industrial heart of Seoul. Jung-gu, the district office, has designated it a special industrial street, with streets of tile, hardware, lighting and printing shops. The printing alley sits where the Jujaso, the Joseon government office that cast type and printed books, stood in 1403. The lighting shops between Euljiro 3-ga and 4-ga date back to the 1960s.

Here's the part that matters for your plan. Around 6 pm the streetlights come on, the hardware shops roll down their shutters, and the old nogari pubs and the newer "Hipjiro" (hip + Euljiro) cafes and restaurants get ready for guests. Arrive before that switch and you see both sides of the neighborhood. Arrive after it and you only see the second half.

Getting to Euljiro: 3-ga or 4-ga station?

Two stations do the work, and both are on Line 2:

  • Euljiro 4-ga Station (Lines 2 and 5). Start here for Sewoon. Visit Seoul puts the Sewoon Cheonggye building about 320 m from Exit 3.
  • Euljiro 3-ga Station (Lines 2 and 3). The tile street starts right outside Exits 2 and 3. Nogari Alley (노가리골목) is about 86 m from Exit 3.

Because both stations sit on Line 2, you can arrive at one and go home from the other. No transfer planning needed.

One small trap: Visit Seoul's own pages disagree on the exit for Nogari Alley. The newest page says Exit 3, and an older one says Exit 4. I'd go with Exit 3, but search the alley in Naver Map before you climb the stairs. Naver Map is a Korean map app, and pasting the Korean name (노가리골목) into it is an easy way to get walking directions. The address is 12 Chungmuro 9-gil, Jung-gu.

An Euljiro evening route you can follow, stop by stop

This route goes from the busy workshop streets to the pub tables. The times below are my suggestion, built around official hours. They aren't a fixed schedule, so move them if dinner runs long.

Stop 1: Euljiro 4-ga Station, around 5 pm. That gives you about two hours before Sewoon Arcade closes at 19:00 (Visit Seoul hours, information as of July 16, 2026).

Stop 2: The lighting and hardware streets, 5 to 6 pm. Walk through the lighting shops around the Daelim and Cheonggye arcades, then along Cheonggyecheon Stream, where hardware shops line about 350 m from Supyogyo Bridge to Gwansugyo Bridge. This is the part that disappears once the shutters drop.

Stop 3: Sewoon Arcade (세운상가) and its rooftop, 6 to 7 pm. Sewoon opened in 1968 as Korea's first electronics market, and a public sky-deck walkway crosses the stream. Visit Seoul lists the arcade at 09:00–19:00, closed Sundays and public holidays, and the 9th-floor rooftop at weekdays 10:00–20:00 (information as of July 16, 2026; checked October 12, 2026). From the rooftop you can look down on Jongmyo Shrine. The Sewoon Cheonggye building next door also has a rooftop with night views of Namsan Tower, but no hours are listed for it. Ask in the building or check before you count on it.

Stop 4: The tile street and printing alley, at dusk. Head back toward Euljiro 3-ga. Around Exits 2 and 3 there are about 80 tile and pottery shops. Between Euljiro and Chungmuro, the printing alley spreads through Inhyeon-dong. Watch for the three-wheeled motorbikes, called sambari, that carry huge stacks of paper through the narrow lanes. This alley is the only place you'll see them. If one comes your way, step aside and let it pass. They're working.

Stop 5: Nogari Alley, in the evening. Finish at the outdoor tables. If you still have energy, Neon Alley is about 158 m from Euljiro 3-ga Exit 11 for one last loop.

Where to eat in Euljiro, plus a guided food walk that ends there

Nogari Alley runs on drinking snacks. Nogari is dried pollack, eaten with beer at the alley's outdoor tables. The alley goes back to 1980, when a pub called Eulji OB Bear started serving nogari instead of the usual snacks. Seoul named it a Seoul Future Heritage site in 2015. These are drinking snacks, though, not dinner. If you're hungry, eat a real meal first.

For that meal, Munhwaok sits near Euljiro 4-ga Station. Visit Seoul's directions mention Exit 4. It's a seolleongtang (ox bone soup) restaurant with more than 50 years of history. Visit Seoul lists it as open daily 07:00–21:00, closed the fourth Sunday of every month, with its brisket seolleongtang at ₩13,000 (information as of July 9, 2026). A bowl of soup between Stop 3 and Stop 4 also makes a good break on an autumn evening.

Want a coffee break instead? Coffee Hanyakbang is about 166 m from Euljiro 3-ga Exit 1. No official hours are listed, so check Naver Map first.

If you'd rather start with a guide, one tour on Viator ends in Euljiro. The Seoul Foodie Walking Tour (opens in a new tab) meets at Jongno 5-ga Station Exit 8. Its itinerary lists about two hours at Gwangjang Market, a 30-minute walk along Cheonggyecheon, then finishes in Euljiro's alleys among the small places to eat and drink. A guide is included. Food and drinks aren't, and the listing asks you to bring cash. You get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. The listing doesn't state a start time, so check the times offered for your date before you book, and don't assume it runs in the evening. It suits you if you'd like company for the market part and are happy to explore more of Euljiro on your own afterward.

Which day works for Euljiro: shop hours vs evening

The workshop streets and the pub alley keep different clocks, so the day you pick decides how much of this route works. Here are the hours Visit Seoul lists (Sewoon and rooftop information as of July 16, 2026; checked October 12, 2026):

DaySewoon ArcadeSewoon rooftop (9F)Nogari AlleyHow the evening works
Monday to Friday09:00–19:0010:00–20:00Varies by storeFull route, Stops 1–5
Saturday09:00–19:00Not listedVaries by storeArcade yes; check the rooftop
Sunday and public holidaysClosedNot listedVaries by storeAlley and a street walk only

In short: a weekday gives you both halves of Euljiro, and a Sunday gives you mostly the second half.

On Saturdays, Visit Seoul lists the arcade as open but gives rooftop hours for weekdays only. Treat the view as a bonus, not a plan. On Sundays and public holidays, Sewoon is closed, and elsewhere hours vary by shop. Visit Seoul lists the wider Euljiro area as open year-round, but with hours that vary by shop. If Sunday is your only free evening, I'd still go. Just aim for dinner and the alley, and skip the shopping streets. If Euljiro doesn't suit your mood, here are other ways to plan one night in Seoul.

Small shops keep their own hours across the whole Euljiro 2-ga to 4-ga area. For a specific workshop, bar or cafe, check its Naver Map listing on the day.

Practical notes: crowds, cash, maps and the Sewoon plan

Crowds. In the evening Nogari Alley gets so busy that even the outdoor tables fill up. For a seat without circling, aim to arrive soon after the 6 pm switch rather than late.

Cash and cards. There's no official list of which Euljiro pubs take foreign cards. My advice: carry a card that works abroad and some won in cash. If a place looks old-school, ask before you sit down. Pointing at your card is enough to ask.

Maps. Save these three before you leave your hotel: Sewoon Arcade (세운상가), Nogari Alley (노가리골목, 12 Chungmuro 9-gil) and your return station. The alleys are narrow, so saved pins save time.

The Sewoon plan. Seoul city has announced plans to replace the aging Sewoon arcade buildings with a large green space linking Jongmyo and Namsan. Its March 2026 briefing called removing the old arcades a task that can't be delayed, but it didn't give a closing date for the building you'd visit. Check the Visit Seoul page for Sewoon Shopping Center before you go. If the hours or the rooftop listing have changed, swap Stop 3 for a longer walk along the stream.

Crowded outdoor tables in an Euljiro-style pub alley at night, one table still free
Seats go fast after dark. Come soon after six, with some cash.

Your next step: pick a weekday evening, open the Visit Seoul page for Sewoon Shopping Center to confirm today's hours, and save Nogari Alley in Naver Map. Then take Line 2 to Euljiro 4-ga and aim to be up the stairs around 5 pm. For bar-by-bar opening times, the Naver Map listing of each place is the most practical place to check.

Questions friends ask

What are Sewoon Arcade's opening hours?

Visit Seoul lists Sewoon Arcade at 09:00–19:00, closed Sundays and public holidays, and the 9th-floor rooftop at weekdays 10:00–20:00 (information as of July 16, 2026; checked October 12, 2026). Check the Visit Seoul page before you go.

Which subway exit is closest to Euljiro Nogari Alley?

Visit Seoul's latest page lists Euljiro 3-ga Station (Lines 2 and 3) Exit 3, about 86 m away, at 12 Chungmuro 9-gil. An older page says Exit 4, so confirm on a map app.

Is Nogari Alley open on Sundays?

Visit Seoul says hours vary by store and lists the Euljiro area as open year-round, so some pubs may open. Sewoon Arcade is closed on Sundays, so a Sunday visit works best for dinner and the alley only.
