One Free Evening in Seoul: How I'd Plan It for a Visiting Friend

One free evening in Seoul? Brandon matches it to your mood: Deoksugung after dark and soup, a traditional drink tasting, or the city wall at night.

One free evening in Seoul: three questions first

You have one free evening in Seoul. If you were my friend, I wouldn't send you a list of things to do in Seoul at night. I'd ask three questions first. How tired are you? Do you drink? Do you want to see the city, or sit down in it?

Here's my short answer:

One rule for all of them: one main thing per evening. Squeeze in two big plans and the second one gets rushed. That's my opinion, but it's how I plan for a visiting friend.

Tired? Deoksugung at night, then a bowl of soup

Jet lag, a long walking day, sore feet. For that friend, I'd pick Deoksugung Palace, because it asks very little of you. It's downtown, it's close to the subway, and it stays open late.

From the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center (checked October 12, 2026):

  • Open 09:00 to 21:00 all year, last entry at 20:00.
  • Closed on Mondays. If a Monday is a public holiday, the palace opens and closes on the next non-holiday day instead.
  • Adult entry is ₩1,000. For foreign visitors, the adult rate covers ages 19 to 64. Foreign visitors 18 and under or 65 and over get in free.
  • Getting there: City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2), Exit 2, then about 2 minutes on foot. There's no parking, so take the subway.

Get in before 20:00 and take your time until closing.

Then dinner. When friends from abroad visited, the food they enjoyed was samgyetang (chicken soup), gimbap and bunsik, our casual snack food. On a tired night, a hot bowl of samgyetang is where I'd steer you. I didn't lead with cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) or sundae (blood sausage), because strong, unfamiliar smells can be a lot on a first visit. Save those for a curious day. Search for a samgyetang place near your hotel in a map app like Naver Map.

Curious about drinks? A traditional Korean drink tasting

Honestly, this is the evening I'd most like to plan. I love traditional Korean drinks. Sool is simply the Korean word for alcohol, and it covers fermented, distilled and diluted drinks alike. Makgeolli, the milky rice wine, is a good place to start.

For a friend who likes a drink, I'd look at Sool Blind Tasting in Seoul - Traditional Korean Drink Experience (opens in a new tab). Per the listing, you taste 6 or more traditional drinks from regional Korean breweries, served blind, with 2 full-size seasonal Korean dishes and bottled water. Blind means you judge each drink by taste before you know what it is. To me, that sounds like the most honest way to find out what you actually like.

  • Where: in front of Chungmuro Station (Lines 3 and 4), Exit 1, on the 2nd floor of the building.
  • How long: about 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Cancellation: full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start.
  • Start time: the listing details I checked didn't show one, so don't assume it runs in the evening. Check the times for your date, and book it only if a slot fits your free hours.

I haven't taken this tasting. I'm picking it from the listing (checked October 12, 2026) because it matches what I'd want to show a friend: regional drinks, real food on the table, and a short time slot.

Want more noise afterward? Euljiro Nogari Alley, in the Euljiro 3-ga area, is known for one very Korean pairing: nogari and beer. It took shape in the 1980s, has been named a Seoul Future Heritage site, and draws big crowds. Go if your friend wants loud and lively. Skip it if the tasting was enough.

Still have energy? Naksan Park and the city wall at night

If your friend wants to see Seoul spread out below them, this is my pick. The old Seoul City Wall runs over Naksan, the lowest of the four inner mountains around old Seoul. Naksan Park has wide views of the city, including the sunset and Seoul at night.

From the Seoul City Wall official site (checked October 12, 2026):

  • The shortcut: Hyehwa Station (Line 4), Exit 2, then about 15 minutes on foot to the top of Naksan Park.
  • The full section: Hyehwamun Gate to Heunginjimun Gate, 3.2 km, about 1 hour, on a gentle slope. The trail is open 24 hours.
  • Keep your voice down: walkers are asked to stay quiet for the residents of Bukjeong Village.

My suggestion: head up as it gets dark, walk only as far as your legs want, then come back down. If it's raining, I'd swap this one for the palace or the tasting.

Just hungry? That's a different question

If your whole evening is about eating, I already wrote that guide: Seoul Food Tour or DIY? How to Choose Your First Food Evening. It compares food tours with a DIY market night.

Plan the ride home before the second drink

Last trains in Seoul differ by route and line, so check yours in your map app before the evening starts, not at the end. And don't add a second big plan just because you have an hour left. I'd rather you go home a little early and enjoy tomorrow.

Your next step: decide tonight's mood now. Then save one place in your map app (Deoksugung, Chungmuro Station Exit 1 or Hyehwa Station Exit 2) and check the last train home from there.
